Babylon and I
As a translator, I am a fan of dictionaries and my shelves are full of unilingual or bilingual dictionaries. Even in the Internet era, I still buy these hardcopies. But of course, even my love for dictionaries does not blind me and I am well aware of the benefits of electronic dictionaries in our profession. These days, the first one I check is Babylon. Why?
Because it’s very handy: it does not overload the system, it waits there in the background and when I need it, one click of a key and another click of the mouse gives me the translation of the word I need as well as its synonyms. And it doesn’t matter on which interface I work: Office programs, Web pages, even PDFs: all of them are helpless when faced with Babylon and cannot continue hiding the meaning of their words.
Because it offers much more than the traditional dictionary: thesaurus and glossaries, side by side with word translation. And speaking of word translation: I myself work in three language combinations, and with Babylon, I could download and install all my relevant languages and have all my necessary dictionaries at the tip of my fingers.
Did I say “relevant languages”? Let’s face it: even a translator who works in one language combination only has not once been faced with the problem of understanding and ultimately translating individual words and even phrases, from a language which wasn’t the language of her/his source text. I work mainly from English, but also from Romanian and French; nevertheless, lots of times I came across Italian, German and Spanish terms and I had to work hard to find their meaning in the web or find a colleague to translate them for me. Conclusion: “relevant” is any language which you, as translator, may come across during your work. The availability of as many languages as you may ever need will make your life much easier – trust me.
A couple of weeks ago I was offered the new version (v7) of Babylon and I am glad to report that it is much improved in comparison with my older version (v5): all the languages that I installed are now interconnected. While in the past, in order to translate a French word (for example) into Hebrew, I had to translate it first into English and from English into Hebrew, now I receive the Hebrew translation in one stage. Thank you Babylon!
And last not least: as so many other high-tech inventions and products, Babylon is what we call in Hebrew, a “blue and white” product, meaning an original Israeli product. All the more reasons to be proud and use it!
